This video shows work in cultivating Effortlessness. This is an amalgam of material I have studied/am studying from various arts that have these mentalities, such as Systema, Bujinkan/SKHayes ninjutsu, "agility" aspects of Western Martial Arts, and Cheng Hsin (*thanks, Al*). These mentalities are valid for all martial arts and artists in the end, as principles are by definition beyond/behind/th...

Fundamental Longsword Guards of Paulus Hector Mair
Просмотров 20 тыс.14 лет назад
This video is on the four fundamental guards of the longsword as they are shown in the works of Paulus Hector Mair. The vid is a simple study guide for the basic use of these guards, as there is no need for much of anything else if one hasnt got the guards down first. Just a few notes. They are covered in the video, of course, but they are worth mentioning again. The first is the tendency to ha...

Instructed medieval fighting, or modern self-defence for that matter, is in my opinion a holistic compendium of a few techniques and principles which are then extrapolated into various and innumerable situations which at first might seem different but are in reality quite similar once one gets past surface appearances. • @Mr-Tibbster
      @Mr-Tibbster 3 года назад

      The Mair staff typically is about 5ft (152cm) to 5'5ft (165cm) depending on the person, ideally according to your height it ranges from being somewhere from the floor up to your eyebrow or forehead. Much shorter than the typical quaterstaff which range from just over 6-8ft (such as the ones shown in this video).

      @@Mr-Tibbster I was advised to measure by height, to the level of the tip of the nose

    • @Mr-Tibbster
      @Mr-Tibbster 3 года назад

      @@hofstadter4355 Yes something along those lines, nose to eyebrow, very little difference :) Either way it's roughly at face level which makes it ideal for the techniques employed in Mair's style, as there is a lot of side switching, grip changes and winding done at fast speeds and close quaters.

    I walked out of work one night and a young man charged at me to attack me, well I had my umbrella so when he got close I stepped to the side and caught him just above his thyroid notch, his head stopped and feet kept going, lifted him about shoulder height then fell down go boom. I looked at my umbrella and said “Didn’t know you had that in you” I’m not sure about all those traps your teaching but it looks fun, have you ever tried my personal favorite a Cane.

      @MontyChance 5 лет назад

      Good job! Yes, for traps and locks you have to be careful and not force things too much. Umbrellas were broken in that lesson on purpose for testing purposes. There are reinforced umbrellas made for heavy action though we were using normal ones. And yes, we had canes and walking sticks, too. Very useful stuff.

    I am a cane fighter so there is really not much of a difference, but I can tell your right of the bat that very few of these moves are valid. Some are but you seem to hollywood this thing instead of bringing reality into it. A man with a knife dont move this way, and a fencer with a cane dont move this way either. But the idea of using an umbrella is great and there are also fighting umbrellas out there made of carbon fiber and weighted handle that can take all the abuse you can imagine. Just dont get the foolish idea to open the brolly to use it as a shield, the enemy will grab it and control your weapon, it would have a huge signature and move slow as a turtle. Reason I fight with a cane is my legs are not up to any kicking anymore so I need the distance the cane gives. Look how stick fighters and fencers fight and you will pick this up fast. There is lots of cane fighting out there and some suck and some dont, it takes experience to see the difference but martial artist will know.

    • @MontyChance
      @MontyChance 7 лет назад

      You're right. This video only shows a high attack, and it was done simply because that is the most common attack shown in medieval texts. For attacks that are lower and closer, you have to be able to move your center freely around its axis. I do have some clips showing examples of this, in Systema (which is historical Russian martial art) at around the 2:19 point. ruclips.net/video/eW3Fe5Lat6k/видео.html

    Could you cleave with a sickle? I'm asking because I imagine that with a concave edge it would be somewhat weird

    • @MontyChance
      @MontyChance 7 лет назад

      Yeah, the design of the blade lends itself to "circular" cuts at contact, like you would with wheat etc. in the field, but the actual farmers' sickles I've seen here in Italy of the hand-forged variety have nice thick blades and at times less of a curve so striking a blow would be far easier, the sweet-spot easier to get at cleanly. Those types could easily go through a forearm and get their way into a skull. They're far superior to what you generally find in a modern hardware store.

      This is undenialably true, but swords are much more expensive and at one time Swords were forbidden for those who were no knights. So they took to their feuds, what they had and a sickle was an affordable farming tool with a midlong blade. Better to have a near Crappy Weapon than so weapon at all.

      Sickle fighting is part of a holistic system of the fighting art shown within Mair's encyclopedic tome. Its basic principles are shared with Mair's dagger fighting, the differences being found in weapon form use. To think that it is inferior to a sword or a dagger is personal opinion, like saying a katana is better than a longsword, and is probably based more than anything on a lack of knowledge on these arts. Bigger does not equal better. If that was true, everybody would have been fighting exclusively with the largest halbards possible (which they weren't), nor does speed alone dictate victory, and both of those considerations don't even bring into question the mettle of the weapon holder, which is always the largest deciding factor. Why does anyone study anything? Probably because it's fun, and in this case, it is a hidden aspect of European history that many did not know existed, and it has a surprising depth of material (as all Mair's work shows) that goes beyond simple technique and common perception.

      +METAL AND PROUD Well, it is known that the Filipinos assimilated the Western arts into their own martial arts after the Portuguese landed on their island. Like any clever and practiced warrior should, they saw things they liked, learned them, took them as their own and found the weaknesses in them to exploit against their enemies. When I was first doing this section of the book, I too was amazed at the similarities.
